How To Repair A Cracked Bathroom Washbasin

How To Repair A Cracked Bathroom WashbasinDiscovering a crack in the bath or basin can instantly send you into a blind panic, but fret not, there may be ways of fixing it without replacing the entire system or enduring the heavy cost of repairs. If the crack is small (less than 12 inches) it should be possible to repair it by yourself. However, if it is larger, then you may need to call in the services of a professional. As soon as you notice the crack it is important to take steps to rectify the situation as soon as possible, as it may cause damage if the bath is leaking. It may also make your bath experience a little less comfortable!

Firstly, we will look at how to deal with a crack in the bath. The first thing you need to determine is whether it is made of porcelain or fibreglass. The next step is to visit your nearest DIY store, where you should be able to pick up a resin repair kit for the specific type of bath. You should expect the repair kit to contain the following:

• Epoxy Resin

• Wet/Dry Sandpaper

• Gel Coat Enamel

• Applicator

In addition to the above, you should also make sure you have a Carbide Cutter.

It is best to approach the crack from the underside or back and you should ensure the area is completely dry before beginning your work.

The first step is to take your carbide cutter and pull it down the crack; this is the space you will use for your epoxy resin. You should then use your sandpaper to get rid of any rough edges around the crack, so the area is completely smooth. You can then add your epoxy resin to the crack, getting rid of any excess as you do it. The end result will be even smoother if you place a plastic sheet on the surface of the crack before it sets.

When the epoxy resin has set, you should then use your sandpaper again to smooth down the surface. It is now time to use your enamel colouring, which should be mixed to match the colour of your bath. When the enamel has completely dried, you should now be able to use your bath as if it was as good as new.

If you are attempting to repair a crack in your basin, the first step again is to visit your nearest hardware store. You should determine whether your basin is enamel, ceramic or acrylic to choose the right kit. It won’t be a permanent fix for the crack as to do this you will have to replace it, but it should last several years and there are also enough of the products to last you several applications.

The contents of your repair kit should include:

• Epoxy Resin

• Hardener

• Spatula

• Sandpaper

• Aerosol Spray

• Enamel Paint

The first step of the process is to use your spatula to mix the epoxy resin together until it has created a paste. You should then apply this substance to the crack and leave it to harden, preferably overnight.

When the substance has completely set, you can then use your sandpaper to sand down the crack. Keep doing this until the area is completely smooth and ready for the enamel to be used.

The enamel should then be applied to the area of the crack and left for a few days to ensure that it is completely dry. You can then apply the aerosol spray for extra protection.

You should now find that the crack is completely disguised and you are able to re-use the basin again. It is best to try and avoid using cleaners which may affect the area for a while after you have made the repair, and you should take extra care around the affected area for a few days after you have applied the repair solution.
